Launching a Shopify store in Morocco in 2026: payment, delivery, and the steps in the right order

The FAYQ Shopify store, with cash on delivery in Morocco

Shopify was not built for Morocco, yet more and more Moroccan brands use it. You just need to know where it does not fit the local market (payment, above all) and how to handle it. I build Shopify stores for brands here (Husla.ma, AZERI, FAYQ, Nourfashion): this is the guide I give every client before we start.

What Shopify really costs

The subscription starts at 39 dollars a month with Basic (29 dollars when paid yearly), then Grow at 105 and Advanced at 399. It is billed in dollars, on your bank card. Basic is enough for almost every store at launch.

What changes in Morocco: Shopify Payments is not available there. Cash on delivery is set up as a manual payment method, and Shopify takes no transaction fee on manual payments. If you add card payments through an outside provider, Shopify charges an extra 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of the provider’s own fees.

Also budget for a theme (free or paid, once), a few useful apps (reviews, order confirmation) and the domain name.

Payment: cash on delivery first, cards later

In Morocco, most online orders are paid on delivery. A store that only takes cards loses a large share of its buyers. The logical order is:

  1. Cash on delivery from day one. In the payment settings, turn on cash on delivery and write clear instructions: the amount to have ready, the delay, the confirmation call.
  2. Cards once the volume justifies it. CMI is the most widely used gateway in Morocco for Moroccan and international cards. You need a distance-selling contract with your bank, which usually asks for a trade register number, and Shopify does not offer CMI natively: the integration goes through an app or an intermediary. Allow several weeks. Other Moroccan gateways exist; check that they connect to Shopify before you sign.

Launching the store, step by step

  1. The domain name, in your name: a .ma reassures Moroccan buyers, a .com serves a brand aiming abroad better. All of it is in the .ma domain name guide.
  2. Currency and languages: prices in dirhams, and a store in French, with Arabic if your customers expect it.
  3. Product pages: your own photos, the price, sizes or colours, and the delivery time written on the page, not hidden on a separate one.
  4. Cash on delivery, set up as above.
  5. Delivery zones and fees by city or region, shown before checkout. Fees that appear at the last step make people abandon the cart.
  6. Order confirmation: a call or a WhatsApp message before shipping. It is what cuts refusals at the door.
  7. Trust pages: delivery, returns, and a contact page with a visible WhatsApp number.
  8. A real test order, from the product page to the confirmation message, before opening the store.

In Morocco, trust is won before the button

A buyer paying on delivery is not risking money, but still hesitates: when will it arrive, what if the size is wrong, who do I talk to. Those answers belong next to the price, not at the bottom of the page. In the store I designed for CASQUETE, delivery in 24 to 48 hours, cash on delivery, returns and WhatsApp sit in the top bar and under every price; the detail is in the CASQUETE case study.

The mistakes I see most often

  • Supplier photos, identical to those of ten other stores.
  • No delivery time on the product page.
  • An order form that asks for too much.
  • No WhatsApp number, or one hidden in the footer.
  • Delivery fees that only appear at the last step.

The rule: open with cash on delivery and a WhatsApp confirmation. Add cards once the orders are there, not before.

Shopify or YouCan?

If you are torn between the two, the full comparison (pricing, fees, design, selling abroad) is in YouCan or Shopify, with the steps to migrate without losing customers.

What next?

See your store before you launch

I build a demo of your Shopify store with your real products and send the link within 24 hours, free: see the store demo page. The rest is on the Shopify expert page.

Sources: Shopify pricing (shopify.com/pricing); countries where Shopify Payments is available and transaction fees on manual payments (Shopify Help Center); terms for online card payments through CMI published by Moroccan banks and integrators, checked on 31 October 2026.

Hamza Benjaaba

Hamza BenjaabaI design and launch Shopify stores for Moroccan brands, with cash on delivery and order confirmation ready on opening day.

How it works

From one link to a site that brings clients.

  1. One link and one line on what isn't working. No call needed to start.

  2. Within 24 hours: the three things I would change first, the scope, the timeline and a price.

  3. New pages around the action you want, a clickable version to test, then development.

  4. Online, Search Console set up, Google Business linked, and the first pages written for real searches.
